Steve Yzerman started his career together with his hometown’s hockey team, Nepean Raiders Junior A. After playing one season for the team, Yzerman was drafted by the Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes from 1981 to 1983. Yzerman entered the NHL Entry Draft in 1983 and was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings as the fourth overall pick. During his rookie season, he tallied 39 goals and 87 points for the team. Yzerman placed second in the Calder Memorial Trophy and became the first 18-year old player to make it to the roll for an All-Star Game. Yzerman received numerous accolades including Lester B. Pearson Award in 1989, Conn Smythe Trophy in 1998, and Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2000. Yzerman announced his retirement on July 3, 2006.
