She earned her first film role at age 11, in the picture Rollover. In 1984, she appeared in the feature film The River Rat and impersonated the character of Jonsy. She subsequently appeared in The Mosquito Coast. Plimpton built her career in Broadway for her characters inThe Coast of Utopia (2006–2007) Top Girls (2007–2008), Pal Joey (2008–2009) and Shining City (2006–2007). Additionally, she performed in theater productions including The Playboy of the Western World, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Glass Menagerie, Hedda Gabler, The Sisters Rosensweig, The Heidi Chroniclesm, and Uncle Vanya. Plimpton’s character in the television series Raising Hope was recognized using a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2011.
