The family then returned to California where he began competing in swimming. In the age of ten, he already had a world record. The family went to Indiana University as a pre-dental student and a part of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

Spitz literally dominated swimming in the mid-60s until the early 70s. He won four Gold Medals in the 1965 Maccabiah Games, his first international contest in the age of 15. He won five Gold Medals, a record that wasn’t surpassed until 2007, in the Pan American Games in 1967. He won two Gold Medals during the 1968 Olympics and additional five more medals in the 1959 Maccabiah Games. Spitz has won nine Olympics gold, a silver, along with a bronze, 31 US Amateur Athletic Union titles, and eight US National Collegiate Athletic Association titles. Spitz has set 35 world records, two were in trials and unofficial. He was named World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World Magazine in 1969, 1971 and 1972.
