Brian Hoyer played football for the Saint Ignatius High School. In 2003, he completed 258 out of 412 passes in 5,570 yards as well as 45 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. He was an Associated Press Division I all-state choice as a senior. He joined the Michigan State Spartan football team in 2004 and was redshirted during his first year together with the team. Hoyer was an honorable mention at the All-Big Ten choice. When Hoyer was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, he had not been picked during the 2009 NFL Draft and eventually, he signed a contract with New England Patriots.
