Orr claimed that he began playing ice hockey at age 5 as forward. Later on, Royce Tennant, his trainer, moved him to defence. On his debut year at the NHL, Orr was considered as the best paid rookie player. On the flip side, his second NFL contract was the first million-dollar deal in the sport’s history. Yet, he was made to sell his assets after his retirement because he was deeply in debt. In 1970, he was named by Sports Illustrated magazine as the Sportsman of the Year. In 1979, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame after three years of waiting.
