Kournikova’s parents were both skilled sportsmen; her dad was a former Greco Wrestling Champ and her mom a runner. Kournikova was given her first racquet in age 5 but failed to pursue the sport vigorously for another couple of years when she displayed signs of actual ability. Kournikova started playing and triumphing in junior tournaments in age 8 and two years later she signed a management deal to attend Nick Bollettieri’s tennis academy in Florida.
